Leveraging Information, Insights and Influence To Help Families

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

The United States budget plan for 2006 calls for cuts totalling nearly $250 billion in domestic programmes – many of which will adversely affect disadvantaged families with children. Since 1981, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has provided independent, well-researched analyses to inform the debate on such proposals at the federal and state levels.

Purpose and Impact of the Grant

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is known for presenting insightful analyses that reflect deep expertise in budget and tax policy, as well as low-income programme policy. This expertise has built considerable credibility with Congress, federal agencies, state officials and the media, as well as with other nonprofit and advocacy organisations. In fact, the Aspen Institute has called the centre the nonprofit organisation in Washington with the greatest influence on federal budget policy. Many advocacy groups rely on the centre for detailed budget and tax analyses.

Atlantic’s grant is enabling the organisation to exert even more influence on the legislative debate. The centre is using the grant to expand its capacity to educate policy makers and the media on proposals and issues, and to help other advocacy organisations analyse federal and state budget issues. The centre is especially committed to enhancing operations at the state level, where its analyses can often have the greatest impact on the fiscal policies and revenue systems that affect low-income families.
