Through our Population Health Programme, we seek to bring about lasting improvements in the health of disadvantaged and vulnerable people by strengthening key components of health care systems. We focus on health in South Africa and Viet Nam.

Although we have distinct programme objectives for each region, our general aims include:

• maintaining and developing the capacity of key health institutions;
• supporting the alignment of national health policies with local community interventions;
• increasing national health promotion initiatives;
• increasing the number of population health professionals and health policy analysts – groups essential for strengthening public health organisations;
• improving information systems that monitor health system performance so decision makers have the necessary data to improve resource allocation and service provision;
• targeting neglected health conditions that are causing the greatest suffering, including HIV/AIDS and blindness; and
• building institutions that will lead an enduring transformation of the public health.
